That's me just moments ago. I just finished drawing a 500-page graphic novel. Radio silence ends now.

I started May 4 and ended September 23. I drew every lunch break, on the bus, on the El, in front of the television, at restaurants and coffee shops, and on the kitchen floor.

Consider the bar raised, 24-hour Comic Day.

It was drawn straight to ink and written in a garbled blend of academic jargon and swears. No script, no outline. Not for everybody. Not for children.

Additional details including previews and ordering information will become available shortly.

Thanks, Grug!

Every now and then something like this happens and I get to be proud of me, too, for a little bit. Then my Midwestern guilt kicks in and I have to feel guilty for ever glimpsing pride.

A lot of times in RPGs when they ask me to name the main character, I name him Tom. How vain.

But that reminds me: have you finished your 500 page history/retelling/personal essay on the Crimean war in time for it to be at SPX?

I'm excited to sit down and read the whole thing all the way through. Apart from the occasional glance backward to see how to draw a character who hadn't been on-panel in 100 pages, I have very little idea of the specifics of what happened in early parts now that I finished the end.

No dogs and cats this time out. It's harder for me to make myself draw people, so I made myself draw 500 pages of people.

Just like it's hard for me to draw different distinct women, so I invented like 20 women characters to make me better at it.

YES!

I can't wait to hold a copy in my hands.

Do we have an official title yet? (Maybe I should have read the one thousand comments above mine to see?).

You cut an impressive, disciplined figure, Tom McHenry, even if you do "carry on about a frightful number of things," as I've heard some accuse.

Big time congratulations.

Thanks!

Title-wise, I'm still narrowing down a list of finalists. I'm thinking of just calling it "Finnegans Wake," so suddenly there'll be all these friends of mine in the world who can say they read Finnegans Wake in an afternoon.

I held a copy of 210 pages from the middle yesterday. It is extremely satisfying to page through an actual paperback of one's own work.
